Johannesburg – A baby girl was abducted in Johannesburg after a woman gave the mother R20 to buy socks for her baby at the Pep Store in the CBD.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said a mother had been carrying her 2-month-old daughter in Kliptown when she was befriended by a passer-by on Tuesday.
“She was carrying her child on her back and after she left a store she met a lady who introduced herself and told her that she hailed from Lesotho,” she said.
“She [the victim] trusted her because she also comes from Lesotho,” Mbele added.
The women went together to a Pep Store where the mother of her child asked the other to hold her daughter.
“The suspect gave the women R20 to buy socks for her child at Pep Store corner Bree and Eloff Street. She went inside and left her with the child; when the mother came out the child and the woman were nowhere to be found,” she said.
